What Is Prolotherapy?

Last updated 9 months ago

Because regenerative medicine utilizes the body’s own healing mechanisms to repair damaged tissue, it is an effective means of treatment for soft tissue injuries in the knee. Prolotherapy is a branch of regenerative medicine that produces excellent results when it utilizes Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). This method of treatment is often used for ligament tears, which may otherwise require surgery to fully heal.

The healing qualities of PRP

PRP is acquired through the concentration of a blood sample from the patient that isolates the platelets to harness their healing capabilities. Platelets contain proteins that facilitate the rebuilding of damaged tissue, such as torn ligaments or damaged cartilage. The platelets are injected into the knee after the simple spinning procedure used to isolate this component of the blood. When soft tissue within the joint is injured, it is not given nutrients directly from the body because there are no blood vessels in these types of tissue. PRP will deliver the nutrients needed for natural healing because of the nurturing proteins within the injections.

Prolotherapy in practical use

Because prolotherapy can offer successful recovery with a much lower risk than surgery in a reduced amount of time, more professional athletes have been choosing it after injuries. Prolotherapy has also been researched for its effectiveness in treating pain that is related to degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis in addition to injury recovery. Results in patients are consistently positive, which will likely increase the number of patients getting prolotherapy as an alternative to surgery and other higher-risk procedures.
